Why Synthetic Fragrances Are the Hidden Enemy of Your Hormones
The word "fragrance" is hiding something
Look at the back of your perfume bottle. Your scented candle. Your car air freshener. Somewhere on the label you'll see it — just one word: Fragrance. Or in Europe: Parfum.
That single word can legally hide hundreds of individual chemicals. Not because companies are breaking the law. Because the law allows it.
In the US, the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act classifies fragrance formulas as trade secrets — meaning companies are not required to disclose what's inside them. As the FDA confirms on its own website, fragrance ingredients can be listed simply as "Fragrance" rather than individually. The EU has stricter rules, but the protection for fragrance blends still exists.
This matters because what's hiding behind that word often includes compounds with well-documented hormonal effects.

What researchers have actually found
A 2025 review published in Frontiers in Toxicology examined the health impacts of perfumes and cosmetics. It found that endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) — including parabens, phthalates, and bisphenols — are frequently found in personal care products, and that these compounds interfere with the endocrine system and disrupt hormonal balance.
The same review notes that a biomonitoring study of 144 Norwegian adults found widespread detection of these compounds in urine, with levels linked to hormone-related toxicity.

Testosterone, fertility, and the male health crisis
You've likely heard the data. Testosterone levels in men have been declining for decades. Fertility rates are falling.
Synthetic fragrance compounds are increasingly being studied as one of many environmental factors that may contribute to hormone disruption.
Phthalates — common in perfumes and air fresheners as solvents that make scent stick to surfaces and last longer.
Phthalates have been associated with reduced testosterone production and impaired Leydig cell function in multiple human and animal studies.
A review in MDPI Endocrines confirmed that fragrance-related phthalates including dibutyl and benzyl butyl phthalates are recognised endocrine disruptors, with documented mechanisms including androgen disruption and altered thyroid signalling.
A 2024 MDPI review on synthetic fragrances notes that the binding affinity of pure essential oil compounds for hormone receptors is so low that doses over 10,000 times higher than an artificial hormone would be required to trigger a similar response — meaning that pure essential oils, used as directed, carry fundamentally different risk profiles than synthetic fragrance compounds.

The "unscented" trap
One of the most counterintuitive findings in fragrance research: products labelled unscented may still contain fragrance chemicals. As the FDA notes, manufacturers sometimes add fragrance to mask the smell of other ingredients without creating a noticeable scent.
The only label that reliably signals no fragrance is fragrance-free.
Why essential oils are different
Pure essential oils are single-ingredient or simple-blend plant extracts. There is no hidden formula. When a bottle says 100% Lavandula angustifolia, that is the ingredient. Full stop.
The research on essential oils — lavender, peppermint, bergamot, eucalyptus, rosemary — is conducted on the actual compounds that go into the product.
When a PubMed study examines lavender inhalation and sleep quality, you can reproduce the protocol at home with the same oil. You cannot do that with a synthetic fragrance, because you don't know what's in it.
What to do about it
The simplest rule: if a product lists "fragrance" or "parfum" and doesn't disclose what's inside it, treat it as unknown.
